About
The Water and Sewer Department maintains approximately 1,020,000 feet of water mains, 850,000 feet of sewer lines, one combined sewer overflow basin, and 9 combined sewer overflows.
The Water and Sewer Department is responsible for:
- Maintenance and repair of 1,024,000 feet of water mains and 850,000 feet of sewers
- Combined sewer overflow (CSO) basin at Puritan and Lola Drive
- 9 combined sewer overflows
- Reading and Service of 22,000 residential and commercial water meters
- Oversight of the Township's cross-connection program
In addition, the office staff handles:
- Customer phone calls
- Prepares bi-monthly water/sewer bills
- Collects and processes water payments, property tax bills, building invoices, and dog licenses
The staffing for the Water and Sewer Department includes 1 Water Superintendent,1 Water Foreman,14 Utility Workers, and 5 Account Clerks.

Entering Private Homes or Businesses
Property Owner, Business Owner, Responsible Party or Tenants:
Your safety and the safety of our staff are our primary concern, therefore when it is necessary for Redford Township staff to enter a private home or business to perform work, inspect or conduct official business, our employees will adhere to the procedure and protocols listed below.
Redford Township employees will do the following:
- Wear a face mask and gloves
- Stay six feet from any person in the home or business
- Only touch areas or items required to complete their assigned task
- Have required daily temperature checks and health screenings
We ask that all occupants/visitors of the homes and businesses please wear a face mask and remain a minimum of 6 feet away from our staff at all times during the visit. Additionally, we ask that if any occupants/visitors are experiencing symptoms that they cancel the appointment before arrival.
Failure to follow the required safety precautions will result in the cancellation of requested services and may require additional rescheduling fees, if applicable.

- What if I have a Flooded Basement or Sewer Backup?

n compliance with Public Act 222 of 2001, be advised of the following. Any resident experiencing an overflow or backup of a sewage disposal system or stormwater system should immediately upon discovery, or in the exercise of reasonable diligence should have discovered, contact the Water Department at 313-387-2670. If it is after normal business hours, contact the Redford Township Police Department at 313-387-2553 and they will contact the Water Department foreman.
You should also file a written claim with the Redford Township Water Department at 12200 Beech Daly, Redford, MI 48239, within 45 days of discovery of the overflow or backup. Failure to provide the required notice will limit your rights under the law. A claim form is available by calling the Water Department at 313-387-2670.
Please note: In order for a claim to be viable, the source of the problem must be the Municipal sewer. Problems caused by your property's plumbing or in your sewer lead are your responsibility.
- Who do I call if I find an illicit discharge or witness illegal dumping?

If you witness an illicit discharge into the stormwater system or witness an individual illegally dumping, you should contact the Wayne County Department of Environment's 24-hour Hotline at 888-223-2363 or on the Wayne County Department of Environment website. Examples of illicit discharges are sanitary wastewater (sewage); septic tank waste; car wash, laundry, and industrial wastewaters; improper disposal of auto and household toxins (such as motor oil and pesticides); spills on roadways and other accidents; and connection to the storm sewer, drain or ditch within State or County right-of-ways.
